Out Of Season

They may actually be any number of shades between pure black and white, but only ash-gray colored birds are eligible for showing under the directive of the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection.

These birds are named mainly for their coloration. And in most cases their color is solid to ashly blue over the entire body, with or without a few black flecks.

The Slate turkey is a meat breed. It is raised mainly for meat production.

The Slate turkeys are hardy birds. They are mostly docile in terms of temperament, although some birds can become aggressive.

Blue Slate Turkey’s weight is only 39 to 60 pounds (18 to 27 kg) per bird. Precisely, Blue Slate Turkey chicks typically weigh 23 pounds (10 kg). This figure for young hens is lower, only 14 pounds (6.3 kg) for a young hen.

The Blue Slate Turkey lifespan lasts an average of 5 to 9 years. This is quite a long life expectancy compared to other conventional breeds, especially Toms.

Hens can lay 30 eggs per season.
